Abstract - QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND THEIR APPLICATION TO THE LABORATORY

Having a Quality Management System (QMS) is essential to achieving ISO and other accreditation in the diagnostic laboratory, but too it is often just a paper exercise. The tools available in the QMS can also play an important role in managing not just laboratory operational effectiveness, but also patient safety and experience. QMS can be the key to improving lab practices and working conditions, as well as providing justifications for additional investments in the laboratory. It is not just a manual or set of SOPs to managed by the quality manager, but an ecosystem of tools, reports and action items to be owned by everyone working in the laboratory to ensure sustainability and consistency and to drive improvements.
